Copper Sulphate

- copper ion (Cu++) is a very effective algaecide used in pools to kill and prevent algae

It's particularly effective against Black Algae, which is not controlled by normal levels of Chlorine

Copper usage can, however, cause stain formation. Over time, and if over-dosed, soluble copper salts can precipitate from pool water and deposit on pool walls, turning the grout or plaster blue

Copper salts react with Chlorine to produce cupric oxide and and may cause grey/black stains on pool surfaces

Copper-based algaecides and algaestats are the commonest source of copper salts for pools but Copper Sulphate is also a preventative treatment and an effective cure for many algae attacks. It's also much cheaper than proprietary chemicals

The recommended dose for Copper Sulphate is 3 grams per cubic metre of water (5 ounces per 10,000 US Gallons), dosed TWICE A YEAR ONLY into the skimmer, with the pump running

The manufacturers, in their helpful product labels, often suggest that this dose should be repeated monthly but twice a year is usually sufficient because the chemical remains in the pool and is only diluted by periodic backwashing and 'splash-out'

If dosed monthly there will be a build-up of Copper Sulphate; and that will stain hair, nails, grout and plaster a fetching shade of blue

Copper can be tested for with Test-strips and some Test-kits

Polyquats

- are non-foaming algaecides sold in concentrations of 30 to 60%

While more costly than quats, polyquat algaecides are very effective against all types of algae

Because they contain quaternary ammonium salts at such high concentrations, polyquats are not only effective against green algae, but also against Chlorine-resistant mustard algae and the notoriously tough and stubborn black algae

Polyquats are very effective at destroying an existing algae infestation, unlike simple quats, which are used as algaestats for preventative purposes

silver ionizes

Colloidal Silver

- a liquid suspension of microscopic silver particles produced by electrolysis in a Silver Ionizer

Silver ionisation is similar to copper ionisation; but colloidal silver also attaches itself to the pool walls and floor, imparting a residual algaecidal action to these surfaces

Electrolytically-dissolved silver has been used very successfully as a water disinfecting agent: e.g., the drinking water supplies of the Russian Mir orbital station and the International Space Station are purified using Collodial Silver

Silver can also cause a black staining to occur on pool walls if not carefully administered, but is a very good bacteriostat that often reduces the need for chlorine

Some ionizers use copper and silver plates, or bi-metallic plates, to produce both silver and copper ions in the water

Quat algaecide

Quats

- are the largest-selling, lowest-priced algaecides

  • These are generally sold in active concentrations of 5-10%
  • Such "Quaternary ammonium salts" are surfactants - wetting agents that lower the surface tension of a liquid, allowing easier spreading, and lower the inter-facial tension between two liquids
  • Surfactants lower the surface tension of the water and "wet" the algae cell walls, splitting it open and killing the algae
  • The lower surface tension may help with the perennial problem of wasps around a pool
  • Quats are most often used as the preventative polyquats are most often used to get rid of existing algae
  • If quats are overdosed they cause foaming on the pool surface
